DIRECTION
The most compelling images rarely come from heavily directed moments. They happen in the spaces in between. When people settle into an environment and something genuine unfolds. When people have fun. My goal on set is an atmosphere that feels relaxed and casual so those moments have room to surface.
My approach naturally encourages space that feels experiential rather than observational. Instead of simply documenting a scene, the goal is to place the viewer within it, creating in a way that feels human, intimate, and emotionally present rather than staged.
My direction is intentionally light-handed. Rather than over-choreographing performances, I focus on creating believable situations and letting real interactions develop within them. Subtle gestures, body language, and natural expressions resonate more than perfectly staged scenes.
DETAILS
Authenticity is the guide. Environments, wardrobe, and small behavioral details help ground the image in reality. Clothing should feel lived in, like a favorite sweater. Something an Arkansan might wear for years because it still fits just right.
Scene elements follow the same ethos, and care should be taken to call back to Baptist Health in a meaningful way. Always authentic, but with intention. A pillow in a Baptist Health brand color that lives in the foreground, creating an artful color wash across the image feels more refined and timeless. Another image might show part of a logo. While another features a recognizable location. Together they create an undoubtedly Baptist library of images.
Baptist is always present. Supportive and consistent, but not heavy handed or distracting.
CAMERA
Be ready, ignore the rules. Everything is subject to an exception. One thing I pride myself on is trusting my instincts on set, and the flexibility to adapt on a moment’s notice. Embracing the imperfect often leads to images that feel the most alive.
Technically, lens choice and camera position are designed to reinforce the feeling of being present in the scene. I typically work handheld, which allows for spontaneous framing and fluid adjustments as moments develop. It keeps me responsive and close to the action, helping compositions feel natural versus overly structured.
My lenses tend to live in the normal to slightly wide range with shallow depth of field, which creates a sense of proximity and immersion without distortion. The viewer feels close to the moment, as if they are standing within the scene.
LIGHTING
Courage, Hope, Strength, and Resilience are some of the words I'd love to evoke with intentional lighting choices for this Baptist Health image library. Whether that's morning sun streaming through a window, or a determined look out over an open sky, light is the defining force for the tone of the image.
My lighting style leans toward backlight and side light, which feels the most natural while giving shape and depth to the environment. Combining that with a naturalistic approach embracing lens flares, light leaks, and foreground elements, results in imagery with texture and dimensionality. These elements subtly reinforce the feeling that the viewer is experiencing the moment alongside the people in the frame.
COLLABORATION
Part of maintaining a relaxed, natural rhythm on set is minimizing anything that makes the process feel overly technical or staged. Instead of being tethered to a laptop by a cable, I use a live wireless capture system that sends images instantly to multiple monitors and iPads for the team to review.
This allows clients, creatives, and art directors to see the work as it develops in real time, while keeping the camera free and mobile. Without a physical tether anchoring the camera to a workstation, I’m able to move fluidly within the scene and stay responsive.
